I had a couple people ask what Ive been up to, so I wanted to post a few initial shots of the city:

Image
I used a 4096 distance texture created to match the terrain shape in a combination of outside apps like bryce, L3DT and Terragen.

Image
There are various terrain modifications like sediment layers (the thin lines) and different types of erosions, sub-plateaus and ridges

Image
I will need locking wheel hubs and low-4 to drive over this, i'm thinking.

Image
and some sherpas.

Image
More to come as I progress...

Nice but I 'd skip all those river trails unless you plan to make so many ...

Just wanted to post a few update pics. I am working on testing initial assets like trees, grasses, rocks, stone wall sections, etc. These are a few tests working also with the ToD settings.

Image

I have been dong a lot of texture work, painting terrain and vegetation textures for later use, trying to get a better understanding of the engine.

Image

There are 2 pine types in this so far, at 1600 polys or so, which is still too high.

Image

This berry bush is about 680 poly, but could be a bit lower, I think. At this size, however, I can also scale it up and use it for a larger more mature tree large enough to walk under, without it being too bad a model.

Yeah that's looking great. You can LOD those trees down, that will help a lot.
From an artistic standpoint I'd darken that forest a bit, but that's just from my memories of elk hunting in the deep timber. I like how it kind of has that feel from the scene in 13th warrior when they first get to Scandenavia in the fog. I'm liking it a lot.
Your trees are good, I'd reduce the number of horizontal dead branches just a touch, it starts feeling a little like a 3D grid in the 3rd picture. It's great in the foggy ones though. Also I'd drop the levels on the trunks just a smidge so they don't pop so much in contrast to the ground. Alternately you could add a 3rd texture to them and make a lump of dead needles, dirt, maybe pine nuts or something around the base so it ties into the ground a bit more.
All in all very well done.
Oh and also some of the best terrain texture work I've seen.

Some initial tests using new rock terrain layers:

These are the default + initial layer only. From here I will begin to do the specific details in smaller areas, like sand along the water, various areas of grass and dirt layers, etc. on top of this.
