1) You usually want to have “Keying Mode” set to “Body Part”. If you set it to “Full Body”, it will go into the Full Body IK, which can be cool and might be useful for certain animations. Basically, FBIK will allow you to move the entire figure from a single IK solver (hands or feet).

2) Always work in layers. That way you can always revert to the original animation before you started tweaking it.
